A beaded surprise! Plus other whimsies.

What better way to resolve a gift giving dilemma, than completing a beaded surprise? I drew our fearless leader’s name, for our annual Secret Santa exchange! Yikes! What do you buy for a person who owns a bead store? It’s problem solving time, but then again, it’s an awful lot of fun!!! The $ limit is low, but we are encouraged make a handmade little something! Thinking cap on, then tune quickly to a beaded surprise. Yep! That’s the ticket! It’s not like I’m not personally flush with beads! Blush! A trip to the beach, a couple of weeks ago, …

Small gifts: Celebrating holiday traditions!

Are you going to make small gifts for the upcoming holidays? Have you started? Are you finished? Or are you in high panic mode? I wouldn’t exactly say that I’m panicking, but I am glad that my workshops for 2017, will be finished by the end of this week. I do love my students, but whew, now I can concentrate! Are you a maker, or a collector? I saw something recently on Facebook, that said that buying beads, and making things with beads, are two completely separate hobbies!!! I truly believe this! Do you? I make gifts, and I’m proud …

Jewelery Layering: Join in on the fun!

Isn’t it about time that you explored jewelery layering? You have boxes and drawers, stuffed full of unloved and abandoned jewelery! How about doing something about it? Image – connoisseurs.com I layer my necklaces, and bracelets, but if I wore rings, I’d layer them as well! I don’t layer earrings, but it’s okay if you do! I’m not a hippie, but I love jewelery layering! I also layer my clothing, as basic black, white, and grey, low necks, high necks, and turtlenecks, are all perfect backdrops for the layered look. Image – Etsy – InaraJewels Free those sad little necklaces! …

November 2017 Bead Mat Update: Exploring my options!

My November 2017 bead mat update, is all over the place! Should I blame the weather, the upcoming season, or admit that I need to play? I am full of creative ideas, but I’m not always organized! Both Intuitive Bead Embroidery, and Artist Trading Cards (using paper collage, paint, and stamps), are on my November schedule. Is it any wonder that I’m confused? They are very different animals, though both very freeform in nature! This piece is a sample from a previous workshop. I made the cabochon! Is it a landscape, or a seascape? Why is it so organized?? Where …

Beaded Cabochons: Exploring the options!

I love beaded cabochons! Okay, I also love stones encased in silver, but for me, the beading part is far easier! Is this a problem? To be truthful, I only know a couple of ways to bead around a cabochon. That’s not to say that I couldn’t learn some other techniques, but perhaps I’m just a little lazy. I couldn’t be afraid of learning something new, could I? My go to, for stone cabochons, is the peyote bezel. I don’t know about you, but if I’m going to put all that work into a beaded cabochon, I want to make …

Handmade gifts! Is it better to give or receive?

“The time has come, the walrus said” to speak of handmade gifts! Should you start your holiday gifts early, or leave them until the last minute? A conundrum for sure, but both strategies have merit! Early gives you lots of time, and a certain amount of peace of mind. Late gifts you with an adrenaline rush, and also the chance to show off your latest skills (perhaps learned in a BeadFX workshop?). To help you get through the season, I also prescribe coffee, chocolate, and medicinal liquids! If you need a kick-start, there’s still time to take either a November, …

Bead Bombing: Sharing the sparkle!

I consider bead bombing, to be a perfectly acceptable beading activity! But then again, I’m a bit of a rebel! What is it? Have you ever tried it? Is it something that you would consider doing it in the future? Perhaps it’s time for a little more discussion! Bead bombing is a fairly new art form, but to understand it better, we should first look at the area of yarn bombing. Lets start with just one, of many definitions: “the action or activity of covering object or structures in public places with decorative knitted or crocheted material, as a form …

October 2017 Bead Mat Update: Mixing it up!

My October 2017 bead mat update, is really a poem to my eclectic tastes! I could tell you that I specialize in one thing or another, but that would be a lie! I love all things creative! Sometimes I just need a taste, to satisfy my craving, but I certainly couldn’t focus on everything. It would be pretty boring, if I only did what was expected! Wouldn’t it? To start off my October 2017 bead mat update, I want to announce that I’ve finished the beading on my little purple minx doll. Hooray!!! That’s really just a working title, but …

Beading woes! Is this the ending, or just the beginning?

Are you familiar with the subject of beading woes? I feel that finishing a project, brings on a certain kind of emptiness. It can only be satisfied, by starting another project. I don’t have many unfinished projects! I do have components, made for the sake of making! Stash is not the same as unfinished projects! They are teaching experiments! That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!!! Freeform peyote bracelet finished – check! I will use it as a teaching sample (early 2018). Sad to finish, but I will work on another soon! Is that a new beginning? Freeform peyote …

Beading emergency! To bead or not to bead?

What do you do when you have a beading emergency? Do you panic, or just buckle down and get the job done? Your time is precious, so think about this carefully! Today is more of a blogging emergency for me! Turkey day (Canadian Thanksgiving) gifted me with an extra day, to spend quality time with some of my older projects. To my delight, I was able to put three of them to bed (sorry, only in-process photos, this week)! My freeform peyote bracelet, a freeform peyote beaded bead (the one with the fall palette), and a wire embroidered, beaded brooch. …
