Bead Mixes: A recipe in creativity!

If you like leftovers, you’ll love bead mixes (also known as bead soup)! What do you do, when you’ve finished a project? Some of you choose to re-sort them, but my preference is to jumble them up into a pile! I love to make bead mixes out of them, corralled in small containers, then saved for rainy days! Or, should I say new projects!!! Starting a bead embroidery, or freeform peyote project, requires a combination of new, and stash seedbeads. I add a dash of accent beads, then pour small, tidy piles of beads onto the bead mat. I don’t …

Creative Musings of an Inquisitive Mind!

What would be the definition of creative musings? If a musing is a period of reflection or thought, then a creative musing is a period of creative reflection or thought. Do you agree? My muse brings focus and light to my creativity, but she also brings dark! Light balances darkness, and darkness balances light! You cannot have one without the other. Sometimes, when I talk about creative musings, it’s because I have absolutely no idea what I’m going to write about! So, my muse helps me to make stuff up!!! She’s very versatile, but not limited to fibre, paper, and …

Creativity Secrets: Nuturing your muse!

What are creativity secrets, and why doesn’t your muse know more about them? Shouldn’t they be easy to spot? Think like a child, then open yourself up to the freedom to play! Who says that everything that we do, needs to be dead serious? Have you considered working in another medium? It might wake your muse up, and help you to work through creativity blocks! Besides, it could be a whole lot of fun! Get down, and get dirty!!! If not mud, then try finger painting. Design some jewelery, based on your painted output! Immerse yourself in colour! If you …

Colouring your creativity! Exploring a world full of possibilties.

Before I talk to you about colouring your creativity, perhaps we should discuss what creativity means to you? Is it only one colour, or perhaps all of the colours of the rainbow? Only you can answer that question! Let’s start by defining creativity! I know that I’ve probably talked about this before, but just for fun, let’s discuss it again! According to Wikipedia: “Creativity is a phenomenon whereby something new and somehow valuable is formed. The created item may be intangible (such as an idea, a scientific theory, a musical composition or a joke, or a physical object (such as …

Follow your muse: You never know where she (or he) will lead you!

Now I didn’t really mean me, but rather the muse inside of you! You know, the one directs your creative self. Remember to follow your muse! Of course, if you still want to follow me, then that’s okay too! When I say follow your muse, I mean that if your inner voice is telling you to do something, then run, not walk, and experience all that your creativity has to offer. What could it hurt? (Note: The above doll is named Fibrella, and yes, she does have a crown of needles!) I know that your muse will sometimes lead you …

Metalwork techniques! I’m a woman obsessed, with learning about them!

Okay not just metalwork, but I’ve always had a fascination with learning new techniques! The actual technique doesn’t matter, but I do need to feed that obsession, when it gets hungry! Should I be personalizing this? If it’s important to me, it’s probably a good idea! Over the years, I’ve fed my obsession with quilting, hand embroidery, fibre art, bead embroidery, beaded art dolls, paper swaps, paints, resin, and photography. It was ,never enough! Am I crazy? I’ve never been obsessed with housework, exercise, or cooking. Does that make me a bad person? Or just a creative one? Weaving has …

Creative hands, make happy work, on a winter’s day!

One of my favourite quotes, is this one by Timothy Attwood: “Creative mess equals creative thought”. Hands (along with other tools, like our imagination), interpret this mess into our jewellery, and art projects. Never take them for granted! They’re not always pretty, and don’t work the way they used to, but they certainly do come in handy (if you pardon the pun)! I thought that you might be interested to see some of the hands, that were put to work, in my Freeform Peyote class, last Sunday. Not all of the photos turned out! I could blame my own hands, …

Which way did it go?

Have you found that you’ve lost interest in your art? Staring into a hole in your creativity is certainly scary, but if you open yourself up to possibilities, you may be surprised at what the tide washes in! I just had to take a walk on the beach last Friday, as the weather was unseasonably warm (18C), and totally delightful! What better time to blow out the cobwebs, and gather some natural elements for future projects? Camera in hand, I set out to see what I could see. Art is apparently everywhere!!! I wonder who took the time to build …

The sky’s the limit!

Did you ever look at a blank page, and wonder what the heck you were going to write on it? Creativity seemed to leave the building, as your brain froze in terror! Think back to the teenage years? Remember the horror? Similar things can happen, when you’re looking at a pile of beads, or other supplies like empty bezels, white dominos, glass tiles, or metal pieces. What to do, what to do? The beads can be shuffled around, until you find something pleasing to the eye, but what about the rest of those blank promises? Clues, I know clues! Lots …

Creativity Abounds!

As an instructor, I’m always amazed how many students claim they’re not inventive and can’t make creative decisions about their projects. Trust me, you don’t need to re-invent the wheel, but inspiration is all around you. Use what you already have, look around you for inspiration and make your jewellery your own. Here are three places you can look for inspiration: 1. Hardware Store A lot of people are stymied by colour. Trust me, if you can pick colour for your clothes, you can pick beads! It doesn’t matter if the colour is on you, the walls of your home, …
