These "turtleback" stone mounts are light and airy and pretty in their own right. They take any 12 mm stone or cabochon or - yes - even a bead.

I dropped in a pair of 12 mm coin beads. I pushed the 4 prongs into place (using flat nose pliers) to hold the bead - thinking that I would probably have to glue it in - but lo - the prongs are holding the beads fine! I've even dropped them a couple of times, and no issues. But a little dot of glue wouldn't be a bad thing either, if it makes you feel  better.
