Moon Face and Magic Spikes

Moon Face and Magic Spikes Tomorrow is the Blue Moon – the 2nd full moon in a month – although there is certainly some debate about that definition of a full moon – my significant other and I actually picked our wedding date because it was a “blue moon” – the rationale was that getting married was “something you should only do once in a blue moon.”  Regardless of whether you are swooning in a blue moon, or simply have teenagers mooning about the house prior to going back to school – you can appreciate these Zen Moon Faces. We …

Seedbeads….

Seedbeads. Those itsy bitsy beads of glass. Mini morsels of deliciousness. I’ve succumbed to their allure like a sailor to a Siren. They said it would happen. It’s been years in the making. All those pretty colours calling out to me, beseeching me to buy them. Marg’s laughing as I write this, I’m sure. She posted this picture on my Facebook page. I love all the books in Master Beadweaving Series by Lark Publishing. I’m also very blessed to personally know some of the authors. They are very encouraging of me exploring the world of seedbeads. Really, they’re just enablers, …

Happy Dance Time!

Those of you with kiddo’s like myself are doing a joyous happy dance right about now. Only one more week until the little monkeys go back to school! It’s also time for us to go back to school – jewelry school that is! Whether you take classes, or learn from books/magazines/videos, it’s a perfect time to brush up your skills, or learn a completely new jewelry related skill. Are you a seedbeader? If so, taking some metal smithing classes can help you create one of a kind components that complement your beaded designs perfectly. Those of you who focus on …

Bead Quilt – Part 2

Part two! As mentioned last week, when Marg was at Bead and Button – she bid on and won this awesome  “bead quilt” at a charity auction. The squares are donated by beaders from all over the world. I’m showing this to you one row at a time – up close and personal – so you can enjoy the craftship in each square. The quilt is entitled “Glorious Green” and the theme: Birds. The artist’s name precedes their work.

The Joy of Metal Clay: Summer Read

My metal clay summer read has been Gordon K. Uyehara’s Metal Clay Fusion.  (And yes to you can buy a copy from  BeadFX.) It has been a joy to read. The book  is beautifully laid out and contains diverse projects.  Let me give you a synopsis.  The book is not meant for beginners, as Mr. Uyehara explains, but it is a fabulous tool to help and inspire individuals to expand their metal clay repertoire.  The projects in the book expect  basic knowledge of handling and shaping clay, although Mr. Uyehara provides instructions and tips and tricks from basis tools to …

The Business Chat – The Joys of Bookkeeping!

You’re an artist, a craftsperson and a passionate small business owner, but there’s a good chance you’re probably not an accountant. Or a finance expert. And you shouldn’t have to be. We all know that the finance side of managing a business can be challenging and not quite as much fun as making pretty shiny things. When faced with a choice between playing in the studio and doing your bookkeeping all of us would prefer to play. However the health of your finances is what keeps you in pretty shiny baubles. And maybe even allows you to pay yourself.   …

Seven days without beads — makes one weak

Oh, you poor thing you – you must be in a state of bead deprivation! As opposed to us. We are NOT in a state of bead deprivation – at least none of us who were involved in the inventory. We counted over 500,000 sales units – so from individual beads to packages to strands – whatever we sell them as – over half a million items in the store.  Can you believe it? Can you fathom counting that many beads? (Yeah – some of you are muttering to yourself, “Hey – you haven’t seen MY workroom have you?”) So …

Anne Mitchell is almost here!

We still have a few spots left – Here’s a repost just in case you missed it. Beginner, or advanced – there is something for everyone! We are so excited to have Anne Mitchell teaching 4 classes at beadFX in September!! She will be with us on September 7, 8 and 9, 2012.  Anne started her creative career years ago as a professional lighting designer. Looking for another outlet for her artistic energies, Anne began teaching chain making and metal working for just pure enjoyment. During those years, Anne found that the creative outlet provided by teaching, as well as …

We’re done! The shop has reopened.

Marg wishes to thank all of you! Those of you who spent the last five days counting, and those of you who have been waiting patiently for us to reopen. The store has reopened as of today.  I’m sure everyone on staff is breathing a huge sigh of relief – it’s not a fun job! On to classes – Yes, our vision has not gone quite screwy enough. Now that they’ve finished counting, it’s time to get back to playing with the beads! Wednesday August 22nd.  Open Beading Night with Stephanie Dixon. 6pm – 8pm. Free, but please register. As …
