Bead Quilt – Part 1

When Marg was at Bead and Button – she bought this amazing “bead quilt” at the Bead Social auction for Breast Cancer. The squares are donated by beaders from all over the world. I wanted to show this to you, as it is an amazing and inspiring example – but I want yout to be able to savour the squares and all the work in them – so I’m going to present it to you over a series of weeks – doing one row at a time. The quilt is entitled “Glorious Green” and the theme appears to be: Birds. …

Joy of Metal Clay

This week was primarily taken up with making a dog tag for our new dog Boston.  The boys voted for a dog bone shape which we had drew onto the clay.  The best way to make your own shape is to create a template and then trace it onto the clay but we used the free form approach. We used Art Clay Copper.  One thing I would do differently  next time is to roll the piece much thicker.  We used six card thickness (approximately 1.5 mm) but to me the finished piece does not feel as solid as I want it to.  …

The Business Chat – Dreaming with your summer brain

There’s a slow and lazy feeling about the last half of August. Humidity is high, cicadas are buzzing and kids are dragging their feet around knowing that this is the end of freedom. No matter how long we’ve been out of school we all feel the laziness now. Add to this the traditionally slow sales of August and we’re all tempted to let the business slide for the moment. Wrong. Now is the time for you to work ON the business, not IN it. When you are working IN your business you are making product, selling product, taking photos and …

Why yes – Officer – I am wearing leather and chains …

Feel like getting your kink on? This classy little number – courtesy of our very own Peyote Pam – combines chain maille with Licorice Leather. I asked her if she would make it into an InspirationFX – and she thought about it, and then concluded, “it’s hard to teach chain maille over the internet” – so she has agreed to teach a class on this in the fall. Stay tuned to our blog, or subscribe to our weekly bead blurb to find out when it’s coming up! (Bet this would look awesome in black!  UPDATE: It does look awesome in …

The Joy of Metal Clay: Gone to the Dogs

Last Monday, I finally did it.  Our family has grown.  We now have another 10 year old boy in the home; a ten year old dog named Boston that is. He is a fabulous rescue dog who seems to have adjusted to our family perfectly. Needless to say when I told my husband I was stumped for a topic today he predicted I would somehow bring it to the topic of dogs.  I guess he’s right.  I will try keep my yattering about my new dog on a leash. Now that we have this boy in our home he must …

The Business Chat – 10 things I wish I had known when I began

It’s hard. It does get easier. Make friends in the community, talking about it makes it easier. Sharing information makes it easier. Just knowing that other people are doing what you are doing makes it easier. Acknowledge that sometimes things are hard. Suck it up. Focus on your difference from the rest of the crowd, don’t try to blend in with all the other businesses. Tell your story, people really do want to hear it. I thought my story was kind of weird, it is actually. But weird in a good way, and weird in a way that sets me …
