I must admit that peyote stitch is my favourite bead weaving stitch! I adore the simplicity of this stinking stitch!
Believe it or not, I actually followed the rules, in the early days! The three bracelets shown below, illustrate the start of my addiction! The one with the bugle beads, was made in a class I took with Marilyn Parker & Maureen Warland (George Brown College), many, many years ago. I ripped that sucker out, many times, before finally getting with the program!!!! I did make one more bracelet, of this type, before vowing never again! Heh, heh, ladies…but I really did love your class!!!
The other two bracelets, also fed my addiction! One was made with a random mix of large Delicas (I use much smaller ones now), and I still enjoy the play of colour in this one. The other is just green! Two colours of dark green triangles, one matte, and the other shiny. I designed it on the fly!
I don’t remember how many other bracelets, I made and gifted away, but these are the only ones I kept!
Years go by, and no peyote stitch to be seen!!! But then, I decided to make a couple of long necklaces out of multi-coloured peyote tubes, attached together with wire wrapped loops. No photos, but suffice to say, that it was a definite labour of love!!
Then came the peyote stitch bezels, on my dolls, and intuitive bead embroidery pieces!
After that, freeform, and here I stay!! I like to combine freeform with regular peyote stitch, but don’t want to limit my options! I make rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants, beads, and even teach classes! My experiments have already included rocks, small pieces of driftwood, pop bottles, and even resin donuts, but what else could I cover? Any ideas?
Next on my freeform peyote stitch agenda, will be a necklace. But what about the whole subject of sculptural objects? I have a huge hankering for making a freeform bowl!!! Perhaps just a teeny one, but a bowl is definitely on my wish list (did I ever tell you that I love bowls?). I’m also pondering peyote stitch and leather, but still not sure where that will take me!!!? Freeform, even or odd count peyote? Who knows? Only time will tell!!
So many wishes, and so little time!!! What’s a girl to do? Listen to the peyote stitch siren song, and follow wherever it leads me!! Won’t you join me in my adventures?
