Best of Both – Silver metal clay textures and soldered construction (2 days)

February 29 @ 10:00 am - March 1 @ 4:30 pm

Cdn $190.00

Course outline: While silver metal clay is a wonderful material to work with, on occasion it is simply easier to use traditional metal work techniques to achieve a design. This class will focus on how to combine wonderfully textured metal clay elements in traditional metalwork designs. No longer worry about calculating shrinkage rates in rings, or whether a bezel will shrink too much and no longer fit the stone intended for the design.

Students will create textured metal clay components on the first day of the class, and project planning will be discussed. The second day will involve soldering, any stone setting or soldered embellishments as well as metal polishing and finishing. Ring or pendant projects are welcome.

This is a two day class and will be held Saturday, February 29, 10:00am – 5:00pm; and Sunday, March 1, 11:00am – 4:30pm

Skill level: Beginner

Prerequisite: N/A

Technique: This class will cover strategies for combining silver metal clay, and traditional metal smithing techniques such as soldering, stone setting, and metal polishing.

Bring to class: some tools will be available in the metal studio

  • 20 grams Silver metal clay (either fine silver or 950 enriched sterling are acceptable)
  • Metal clay tools including texture sheets, slats and a roller
  • Fine silver bezel wire, or Fine Silver 3.25 mm Round Wire (that will be rolled out into bezel wire during the class). The length required is cabochon-specific, and so the material does not necessarily need to be purchased before the class.
  • Cabochon or other unique gem (Cabochons should not be more than 25mm in diameter, or be less than 4mm. The material of the cabochon could be made from stone, glass, enamel, or ceramic. No plastic, please.)
  • Recommended tools will be discussed during the class, but students should feel free to bring any metalsmithing tools they may already have such as files, or jewellery pliers. Class tools will be available for use within the metal studio.
  • Flat bezel-pusher (no groove on the tip)
  • Burnisher
  • Fine needle files (4-cut is preferred)
  • Sketchbook and pencil
  • Optional: Visual aids such as optivisors or magnifying glasses
  • Optional: Feel free to bring personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, or particle masks.
  • As these are full-day classes, please bring a lunch or snack. Coffee and cold drinks will be available.
