The Flat Maille Conspiracy: Part 1

January 18 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Cdn $70.00 +Kit fee: $20 plus choice of kit(s), payable to the instructor the day of the class.

Course outline: Join Marilyn Gardiner for a full-day exploration of 4 chains that lie flat. You’ll learn how to make them and see a variety of ways they can be used in jewellery making. (No, this class isn’t about the flat earth conspiracy!)

**Prior to class, students should download and review four documents with basic information about chainmaille:  https://marilyngardiner.com/support/student-resources/?v=3e8d115eb4b3

Part 1: We will discuss questions you may have about:

Tools:

  • Buying pliers: how to choose, what to consider when you are choosing pliers to buy
  • An opportunity to try out lots of different kinds in class

Wire & jump rings:

  • What you need to know before you buy wire & jump rings
  • Different metal options, their qualities, their cost, and how to clean them
  • How to open and close jump rings

Lighting & Magnification:

  • Try out different types of magnification and learn about lighting options

Part 2

You will start by making a silver filled Parallel (Helm) Earring with a briolette crystal. Quality workmanship will be demonstrated and encouraged. Next, you’ll learn and make 3 sample flat weaves.

  • Garter Belt
  • Vertebrae
  • Japanese Stepping Stones (Japanese 12 in 2)

As we make these we will examine jewellery samples and photos to see the variety of ways these weaves can be used to make bracelets, pendants, necklaces and earrings.

We’ll also see examples how these basics lead to variations such as Celtic Dawn, King’s Scale, Scaled Vipera Berus, and Shenandoah.

Part 3

To finish the day, you will choose from a selection of related project kits and start making your choice of a bracelet, earrings or necklace to work on.
