Now these lovely charms also fall into the category of holiday themes. The first one here is someone’s idea of a reindeer. To me – it’s a moose. Don’t you think it’s a moose? I think it’s a moose.

The stags here are so elegant, they might have just strolled out of a medieval bestiary. Hand-drawn by monks on vellum meets laser-cut stainless steel. And the snowflake – set with a cubic zirconia? Stunning. Snowflakes are charming, when you don’t have to shovel them, drive in them or freeze your butt in them.

YES! It is puppies and doggies! You can’t give a dog for Christmas, but you can make dog earrings, charm bracelets, pendants, key chains. Oh yes – if dogs make your heart sing, or your friends – celebrate with a heart dog.

I’ve labeled them the way I see them, but if you see them differently – you run with it. Like the Sheltie – if you see it as a Collie – not gonna argue. Is that lab a Bedlington terrier? By all means. Sammy, Chow, Schipperke, Pompom or Akita, sure. Doxie, mini or standard?

Corgis – and if the Queen couldn’t stop at one – I don’t see why you should either.

Just a quick note – between shipping and holidays and etc., we won’t be able to restock this new stuff till the new year – so if you love it, grab it.

Take this necklace for instance. I’ve always loved green, and blue stones, but never brown. Except in this case! A few weeks back, we added these unusually shaped, Chrysoprase flat nuggets to the site. I couldn’t get them out of my mind, so ended up purchasing a couple of strands.

Inspiration struck, when I remembered that I had another strand of fatter nuggets in the stash. These were purchased years ago, and were mainly in a beautiful shade of green (with a little brown mixed in). My muse started humming, but then I had to come up with a plan.

I’m not really a planner (in the beading sense), so I just cut open the strands, and started playing. I didn’t like mixing them together, so decided to do the following. I strung half of the flat nuggets, then the fatter ones, and ending with the other half of the flat ones. Do these nuggets make my necklace look fat?

I thought the necklace was a bit boring! Then, I remembered a large Sterling Silver hook clasp, that we had in the store. What if I used the clasp asymmetrically in the front, instead of tucked in the back?

It worked, and I like it a lot! My only regret, is that the clasp is smooth, and not hammered. But who says that it can’t be hammered later? Hammering is good for stress relief!

I still have another strand of the flat nuggets, but what I will do with them? How about a double wrap bracelet? More play next weekend.

I also started thinking that accidental pairings are amazing, when working on this little needle-book. It’s from one of the “Making Zen Online Retreat” videos, and I thoroughly enjoyed every little slow stitch.

Probably one of the first fabrics that I ever jar dyed (the pink)! Wow, it certainly takes me back!!
accidental pairings are amazing

The structure, and instructions were quite simple, but I just couldn’t leave it at that! So I complicated it, with extra stitching. I was tempted to add some beads, but I really didn’t have enough room. Next time!

Indigo was my first plan, but then I rifled through my stash. The orange, and pink fabrics were a given, but the soft blue was a surprise! Materials used – cotton batiks, hand dyed cotton sheeting, sari silk (from a couple of thrift shop saris). The inside pages are 100% wool felt, purchased from Monica at The Olive Sparrow (over 100 colours!). She’s just down the street from BeadFX!

I love these acrylic crackle, bubblegum beads, so decided to whip up a little bracelet. This might be an “Inspiration” in waiting! I wonder what I will do with the rest of the beads?

accidental pairings are amazing

Yes, accidental pairings are amazing, but they’re not the only type of beading that’s enjoyable. I’m a crazy, intuitive beader, but that doesn’t mean the rest of you are. I will try to seduce you towards my evil, intuitive designs, though! Heh, heh! Enjoy your week!

This flat wide wire – copper colored aluminum, actually – gives us some cool new ways to think about using wire.

So grab some of it, and your bail making pliers, and let’s give it a whirl.

Start with your flat wire stock with the end pinched in the pliers. I don’t measure and cut, I just work right off the spool.

Start spiraling around – you have to lay it at a bit of an angle, so the subsequent spirals lay next-to, instead of on-top-of.

I have good success with 6 spirals around the jaw of the pliers.

Like so.

Cut the spiral off – grab some fairly heavy duty cutters – the wire isn’t hard, but it is thick-ish.

Start curling it around, you can start with just your fingers.

Then tweak the curves with your bail pliers.

You might have to nudge or trim the ends to make it sit nicely

Like so.

I use the Hole Punch Pliers to make a hole in the wire for a jump ring.

A little sanding to smooth the ends would not be amiss.

I seriously need to moisture. It’s not even full winter yet. Argh.

You can add a head pin curved into an ear wire and wear as is …

Or get a little fancier with a pearl dangle and a couple of jump rings and an ear wire.

What else can you make with flat, wide wire? Textured Dangles? Rings? Riveted Bracelets?

Cheers!

Sale Rules

Some items ARE excluded from this sale: Classes, gift certificates, special orders, some metal clay items, some tools, and previously discounted items, and a few other items which are already at wholesale prices. You will be able to see online if an item is discounted. Remember – you always get the best possible discount – so if something has been discounted more than the sale discount – you will get the better of the two discounts. https://www.beadfx.com/wordpress/index.php/fine-print/

We are busy during sales – we have a few rules to make this go smoothly.

  • We are happy to combine orders and correct the shipping. Especially if it kicks you into the free shipping category.
  • If you want to pick up your order, please be patient – we pick orders in the order they come in. We will contact you when your order is ready to pick up.
  • The discount is NOT retroactive and does not apply to previously purchased merchandise.
  • No special orders or special bulk orders will be accepted at the sale prices.
  • No Rainchecks. No backorders. No holds.
  • 10% Sale ends Midnight, Wednesday, December 14th. (Toronto time – EST). If you haven’t checked out by then – the items in your shopping cart will revert to regular prices. Poof! 20% items end midnight Nov 23.
  • If the shopping cart is giving you grief – email us at info@beadfx.com. We have a super-tech-guru standing by to beat it into submission for you.
  • If you do place a phone or email order, please ensure that you have the sku/product numbers as well as the description. It’s always distressing to find the order pickers hiding in the kitchen, eating two-bite brownies in one bite.

We do anticipate that shipping will most likely be delayed by a day or two from our usual time-frame.

Remember – We combine orders, so you can place multiple orders, and we’ll combine to get you the best deal on shipping.

Easiest way is to place the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and oops-I-forgot orders as a “callback” – no cc required, and we’ll call you once we have a new total.

My creativity is making a slow return, thanks to the Making Zen Online Retreat. I’m making progress on this colourful needle book. I feel that it’s important to ramp up the colour, now that we’ve reached a darker time of the year.

Colour play is where it’s at

Colourful cotton batiks, with a touch of Sari silk, makes for a brighter day!

Fibrella is the Queen of Fibreland, but she’s also a very colourful minx. I’ve been using her as my on-line Avatar for years, mainly because my friends told me that she is my alter-ego. She was made too many years ago to count, yet is still my one, and only soft sculpture doll.

Colour play is where it’s at

This series of triangles (plus six more), was my first foray into visual journalling with beads, but certainly not my last. Many thanks to Robin AtkinsBead Journal Project, for a ton of sparkly fun, combined with stress relief, and a much lighter pocket book. LOL!

Colour play is where it’s at

The multi-coloured beads at BeadFX illustrate that colour play is where it’s at! However, we were missing Bubblegum beads (trendy, according to one of our customers), and I’m happy to say that Dwyn added them to a recent update.

I loved the small crackle beads, but had to dream up a project. Inspiration struck, but I neglected to buy a necessary component, so I’ll leave you with a photo of just a few of the beads. Guess what I’m going to make with them? If it works out, I’ll post it as an “Inspiration”.

Colour play is where it’s at

These Chrysoprase strands struck my fancy, then I remembered some large, luscious green nuggets (also Chrysoprase) languishing in my stash. A new necklace, perhaps?

Colour play is where it’s at

Balls (orbs), bowls, and a stone!

Colour play is where it’s at
Colour play is where it’s at
Colour play is where it’s at

How about a colourful photo of some flowers, just because we won’t be seeing these for a while. Sigh!

Colour play is where it’s at

Colour play is where it’s at, and colour + play is what drives me to create! What drives you to create, and wouldn’t it be nice if we all the time in the world to play?

Bubblegum Beads

Plus – the zebra stripe ones almost look like a scrunched fabric when strung together.

For a pop of color – go with these interestingly textured “crackle” in mixed colors. There are no wrong color combos, but you can go for an ombre effect – shading from blue to green, or from pink to purple.

I love the “Elastic Cord Needle” for fast and easy designing and threading on elastic.

If the hole is not big enough to pull the knot inside – then I hide the knot with a big, 7mm crimp cover.

For the stretch cord itself – my personal fave is Opelon – which comes in white and black.

Cheers!

New stones this week – including one you might not have heard of.

A new stone? How is that possible? Well – this one has it’s origins with us humans, rather than the millennia long processes of geologic time. In other words – made-by-peoples. 😉

Meet Terahertz! Terahertz is an ore that is made from extracting silica from sand. It is a new, human-made stone with only a decade-old history and was first made in Japan. It is similar to hematite in color, but shinier (it is very shiny) and somewhat lighter than the iron-rich hematite. If you google “terahertz stone,” you will find a lot of claims about how it is the miracle healing stone of the century – protecting from harmful electromagnetic radiation, electronic smog, makes you feel warmer and more energized, etc., none of which I can speak to, other than with a deep general skepticism.

I have been wearing a bracelet made from it for two weeks now and can authoritatively claim that I am no younger, my skin isn’t clearer, and I haven’t won the lottery. If the value of a healing stone is how it makes you feel – then this super shiny stone will make you happy when you see it sparkling on your wrists.

In other stony news, you can go green, or greenish, with some Chrysoprase or Amazonite. The Chrysoprase ranges from vanilla to mint to caramel and chocolate. The Amazonite beads are Big Hole beads – suitable for stringing on leather or cord.

(That necklace in the header is the Chrysoprase nuggets and the Faceted Cubes.)

Also – new in the Chakra Selection Mixed Stones – so pretty – so inspiring.

Also – this Smoky Quartz Crystal Scent Bottle Pendant joins our other scent bottle pendants. The lid screws off, and it holds about 1ml – a little less than a quarter of a teaspoon.

What other delish goodies do we have? Well – Miyuki seedbeads in size 8/0 and 11/0 that stopped in the Czech Republic on their way here from Japan, and got dressed up in some of the Czech bead colors that you know and love! Colors like Lava Red, Black AB, Vintage Copper, Crystal Labrador, and Black Marea.

Some very cool new pendants, the Moon Moth, the Celtic Wolf, and the Fluffy Rainbow Feathers. Any of those would be a great name for a band. Live, on stage – one night only. Moon Moth is a husband and wife duo – she’s an amazing singer but everyone wonders what he brings to the table. And the Fluffy Rainbow Feathers is the Village People meet the Partridge Family. Bubblegum Beads – is this the next hot trend? These are actually pretty cool – large beads – round – like jaw breakers or bubblegum balls.  10mm and up (those beach-ball ones are 19mm!) – and light – because they are made from Acrylic – not glass or stone. Do you know any creative solutions to the challenges of an artistic slump? Would you be interested in sharing them?

There’s nothing to be ashamed of, we all go through it! I’m just digging myself out of one now, so I have a few ideas to share with you.

Don’t get tied all up in knots about it, as it’s something that will pass in time. Take advantage of the downtime, then rev up your engine with something that you want to do. It doesn’t matter what, just do it!

After obsessing about it for a while, I frequently decide to commune with nature. Walk on a beach, stroll down a garden path, or just walk in my own neighbourhood. Put on a movie, read a book, take a nap, buy new shoes, eat chocolate, or cook a spectacular meal. Pamper, and indulge is the name of the game!

Breathe!

Do not sweat the small stuff! Throw yourself a wee pity party, then forget about it!!

Write about your angst, then tear up the page, and throw it out (or burn it)! Give yourself permission to let it go.

Pull out some of your other art supplies, and play! Make marks on paper, stitch, paint, knit, or crochet something!  Paint a rock, sketch something, or how about whittling a stick? Visit the bead, yarn, or art store!!

Keep your creative solutions to the challenges of an artistic slump, simple. Don’t over-complicate them!

Mix up some of your creative techniques. What if you stitch, or bead on paper? How about working with natural objects! Spray a pine cone, make a wreath, take a class, or simply pull some weeds out of the garden.

The results don’t matter, but the journey does! Play, play, play, until you relax, and start getting ideas again.

I love combining techniques! So, how about a little eye candy to tickle your fancy!

I have made a start on my Making Zen Online Retreat, and this is the first thing that I stitched. It’s going to be a needle book, but there’s still a lot more to do. Not to be self-critical (right?), but there’s one element that still needs work, so I will need to consult with my muse. I want to finish it by next weekend (although I am tempted to add a few beads), because there are some fabric wind chimes, that I would like to try next.

I haven’t stitched for a while, so my hands are a bit sore!! That’s what happens when you try to cram it all in on one weekend.

Older pieces, that show my love of combining techniques. Most started out by just fooling around, and some while in an artistic slump!

Pretty plain, but this is my first handmade artist brush!

I embellished most of my other brushes.

One of my Bead Journal Project pieces! Painting on fabric, found objects, intuitive bead embroidery, and free motion machine embroidery.

A serendipity piece that will eventually end up as an artist book. Mono-printing on interfacing, needle felting, beading, hand embroidery, and resin focal.

Amulet pouch necklaces, that combine hand embroidery, and beading.

Altered beads, and the Diana Photo App.

I started with this type of bead, then embellished with Iced Enamels (alas, only one colour left in the store). However, now I’d be tempted to use our luscious Jet Age Powders, which are even more blingy!!

Does this give you enough creative solutions to the challenges of an artistic slump? If not, how about re-organizing your stash, then cleaning up your crafting area? I don’t know about you, but I always stumble across something that gives me the itch to stitch!  Have fun, and remember to play!

Read all the way to the end – I’ve saved the best for last.

I know – there’s some serious eye-rolling going on out there – but … us creatives have to think ahead! AmIright? Something in this weeks update – and it’s a big one, is bound to spark some joy for you.

So – for those of you who are charmed by Christmas – for whom there are no men like snow men, who can’t reindeer in their enthusiasm, for whom Santa is the Jolly old elf on the shelf – we have Holiday Season Charms! A Christmas by any other name … 😉

We have Santa Cats – that’s Sandy Claws – and Moons with hats – Heeeello Santa Moon. Long lost mittens and stockings for coal, …

Canes and bells and wreaths and twinkly snowflakes. And more! Charming little charms for Cheery ears, happy bracelets, and holiday accents. I’d suggest wine charms, if I thought those were still a thing. Mask charms? They are sweet, petite, but not to eat.

How about a Christmas Tree pattern? This tree design can be made small for earrings, or bigger for a pendant, tree decoration, window hanging, Christmas decor, or a beautiful hostess gift. Email me for the pattern. It uses seedbeads in size 8/0s mostly, a few 10/0s, and this multi hole connector bar.
