Cool off Creatively during the Dog Days of Summer

We’re in the midst of the ‘Dog Days of Summer’ – traditionally the hottest part of the season. The origin of the saying doesn’t actually refer to our canine friends but to the placement of the Sun in the in the canine constellation of Sirius. Your trivial tidbit for the day! The air conditioning has been working at full speed at BeadFX as we’ve had a couple of scorching heat waves in Toronto. The comfort adds a benefit to taking a class! Our mid to late-August classes feature new classes as well as encore projects – just in case they …

“May” all things be possible!

May is a month of celebrations – some very serious, such as Mother’s Day, and Cinco de Mayo, and some that are just plain wacky – such as ‘Star Wars’ Day (May the Fourth Be With You.) Late-May celebrations includes Victoria Day in Canada and Memorial Day in the United States. The best part is enjoying a long weekend with friends and family. To be honest, I’m finding that May is racing by; June seems to be right around the corner. Join me by living in the present and enjoying what is here and now – including upcoming classes with visiting …

Stir your Spring Spirit with a class

Spring! Winter is finally passing and the weather is showing a hint of warmer temperatures and sunshine. Depending where you are in Canada, tree buds may be starting to bloom and crocuses are starting to poke up through the ground. Spring is a time to shake off the winter grime and pull out the brighter-coloured clothes. If course you need jewellery to go with your new Spring wardrobe – why not make it for yourself and friends! Our mid-April classes will stir your Spring spirit with some seed beading, metal clay, fibre work and more! Here are the classes and …

Bead-A-Muse: What is this?

What do you think of the term Bead-a-Muse? Or perhaps I should call it Craft-a-Muse? I was actually thinking of writing about collecting beads, in this blog post (and believe me, I do!). However, my ideas tend to be fluid, so somehow collecting ended up as a post about Bead-a-Muse. When I Googled Bead-a-Muse, it came up with a variety of very different images, including dolls, some beaded objects, and a collection of miscellaneous images. Not exactly what I was looking for!!! Here’s my first muse – Fibrella!! Some have even called her my alter-ego! Could it be our inner …

Bead Mixes: A recipe in creativity!

If you like leftovers, you’ll love bead mixes (also known as bead soup)! What do you do, when you’ve finished a project? Some of you choose to re-sort them, but my preference is to jumble them up into a pile! I love to make bead mixes out of them, corralled in small containers, then saved for rainy days! Or, should I say new projects!!! Starting a bead embroidery, or freeform peyote project, requires a combination of new, and stash seedbeads. I add a dash of accent beads, then pour small, tidy piles of beads onto the bead mat. I don’t …

Hot Leather Bracelets: Are you cool enough for them?

It’s meltingly hot in Toronto, so I felt that it was time to discuss hot leather bracelets! What’s the weather like in your part of the world, and do you like leather jewelery? I haven’t made much in the way of leather jewelery, but I’d like to change that in the near future. Leather is one of those frontiers that I’ve been hesitant to cross. But why, you say? I don’t really know. Several years ago, I did make a series of Regaliz leather bracelets. They were fast, fun, easy to do, and made great gifts! Simple components, that slide …

June 2018 Bead Mat Update: Mixing up my media!

I didn’t think that I had much to include on my June 2018 Bead Mat Update, but I was wrong! You’ll find that I’m a little all-over-the-place this month. Does that mean that I have AADD (Artistic Attention Deficit Disorder)? I’m afraid that I resemble that!!! Do you? First up on my June 2018 Bead Mat Update, is one of my personal UFO2Go items. A cute beaded button (that will be turned into a pin), but originally an unfinished class sample from earlier in the year.. Then there’s the stone, metal, and leather bracelet from last year. Almost finished, but …

Leather and Lace: A Stitch in Time!

What do you think of when I say leather and lace? Does it take you back to the 60’s, the 80’s, or even to one of those other times, when trends from prior periods, get adopted and then shine brightly for a while. As a former teenager (heh, heh), there’s nothing better than an outfit, that includes blue jeans, leather and lace. As a Baby Boomer, I need to state that we still love those outfits, but now they contain spandex! Who invented spandex anyway? That person needs a medal, our undying gratitude, and a whole lot of money!!! True …

Statement pendants! Are they the next big thing?

Statement pendants are a current jewelry trend, according to a recent issue of Jewelry Making Daily (Interweave). I find that very interesting, because I’ve been making, and wearing them for years! Does that make me fashion forward? As the article explains, “For spring and summer, pendants of all shapes, sizes, and configurations of materials, on very long strands of beads, chains, or leather cords”. Long lengths are definitely in, but I’m most comfortable with the 30-34″ range. Of course, the runways will always exaggerate and go longer, but those skinny models, don’t need to worry about the daily logistics! Imagine …
