My Life in a Box!

You might think that I’m a very out-of-the box person, but let me assure you, that my creative life lives in a series of boxes. Of course, I’m not talking about supplies, because that’s an entirely different blog post, which I will get to eventually. I’m terrible at dates, so I could not tell you how old some of these boxes are. Let’s just say that they started around 2007, because that’s as good a date as any. There’s a lot to be said for writing dates on your projects, but I’m bad at that as well, except for some …

What’s Old is New Again: Isn’t that the truth?

What’s old is new again, and I’m not just saying it! Of course, what’s old is also old, but that’s what memories are made of. Not to mention, what’s new, is still new, but that’s another story. First up is one of my favourite Bead Journal Project (BJP) series from the past. I never remember which year is which, and am too lazy to actually look it up, so let’s just say it might be 2009. This series is loosely based on colourful row houses. It was tons of fun, and includes many lasting memories. In each house, you will …

Oh Dear! Now what am I going to do?

So, the big question is, now what am I going to do? I’ve just finished my 100 Day Project for 2022, and I’ll have some discretionary time to spend. But on what? Ideas are percolating, but may take a little time to gel in my creative brain, so please be patient! There may be a lull, but then again, there may not. I seem to be in a retro beading phase right now, so how about a shot of my first BJP (Bead Journal Project), for the 2010 year? This one started out as a “Bag of Beads” challenge for …

Springtime Tales – Life in Toronto!

To tell a tale of springtime in Toronto, is a challenge for sure! You never really know where it’s going, and when it’s going to end. Oh sure, the leaves have either unfurled, or are unfurling, and many of the buds are out! The magnolias are dropping their blooms, and the fruit trees are starting to put on a show. But did I mention, that the air is full of pollen? Achoo!! Toronto is a place where winter tends to linger, teases us with spring, then summer, then cooler weather again. Last week was quite warm, but we now have …

Begin at the Beginning: Ready, set, bead!

I’m just going to begin at the beginning, because that’s the absolute best way to start. But what do I mean by that? Well, my Intuitive Bead Embroidery adventures, started with Robin Atkins’ Bead Journal Project, towards the end of 2007. Before that, I had done a bit of bead embellishment on some of my fibre art pieces, but nothing to really write home about. Robin challenged us to make one piece per month, for a total of twelve months. They had to be the same shape, contain at least one bead, and tell a little about what was going …

I Have Nothing to Say!

I have nothing to say, because it’s hard to stay positive when people are still suffering in a needless war! I’m trying to keep this blog post art related, but as I feel myself drifting towards the other narrative, I’ll try to be good. If you check out Dwyn’s post here, you’ll see that BeadFX is doing what we can, to help in our own beady way. The quick response from our customers has been amazing, and we dearly thank you for your contributions. Now on to another topic! With Rosemary’s encouragement, I decided to focus my thoughts, and make …

Nostalgia Lives: Or so it seems!

Nostalgia lives at my house, but is that a little crazy? I need to live in the present, instead of digging up the past? But, nostalgia is an indulgence that just keeps on giving! I love ephemera, old linens, fabrics, natural objects, Eco-dying/printing, recycling, and repurposing whatever I can get my hands on. However, I do get distracted, and never hesitate to get messy!! LOL! But what does this have to do with jewelry? Nostalgia lives in old, broken jewelry, but haven’t used all that much lately. BeadFX sells new beads, but I love the challenge of combining the two. …

Flying on Empty: Or so it seems!

Is flying on empty a real thing? I think so, because that’s what I’ve been doing. Am I feeling it because of the social isolation of Covid, or does it have something to do with the aging process? Nah, must be Covid! I decided to take a week off, but didn’t go far, or do very much (despite my big plans). I wandered around the beach, and drove to Belleville to visit a friend (on two separate days). Both were fun, but I was a slug the other days. I must admit that I wasn’t all that creative, although my …

Working in a Series: One heck of a challege!

Working in a series, is certainly one heck of a challenge! However, it’s something that I both welcome, and enjoy! I’m very selective about the outside challenges that I accept, because I do need to keep my focus on the end result. With the #the100dayproject, it was easy, because the goal was 100 pieces of something. Not hard, because I set the parameters. I need to tell you that I was definitely slowing down at the end. I wanted each piece to be unique, but sometimes all I wanted to do was splash paint on paper. It was quick, effective, …

What are you waiting for? Dream on!

What are you waiting for? Dreams are cheap, but not impossible! But, what about the elephant in the room? It’s St. Patrick’s Day! Not a drop of Irish in my veins (not even whisky), but on this day, everyone is Irish!! With the exception of landscapes, you won’t find a lot of green in my work. However, I pulled out a couple of earlier Bead Journal Project pieces (2007/2008). My first introduction to both intuitive bead embroidery, and visual journaling. I haven’t looked back since! A small bead embroidered brooch, with my hand-painted focal. Sure, and begorrah it has some …
