Metalsmith Essentials: Introduction to the Hydraulic Press

Course outline: Using a hydraulic press will expand the options for your jewellery design. In this class with Iris Rogers Melamed, we will cover hydraulic press guidelines and basic operations. We will explore the use of a small (8 ton) hydraulic press for cutting out shapes in metal (allowing you to produce multiple pieces quickly). Also, using copper and brass wire, we will emboss patterns in some of these shapes, adding dimension to your work. Course outline: In this class with Iris Rogers Melamed, we will explore the process of creating patterns from four different metals – sterling silver, copper, brass and bronze. Starting with a basic structure, we will progress through cutting and rearranging to make unique designs that will then be transformed into jewellery. You will not necessarily make the pieces shown – yours will be your one of a kind patterns and jewelry. Through this process we will be soldering multiple times, using different techniques. Course outline: Learning to solder silver is your gateway into the world of fine metalwork. In this class with instructor Iris Rogers Melamed you will learn how to solder circles of heavy gauge silver wire and transform them into earrings and stacking rings. We will begin with an overview of soldering tools, materials and techniques. Then we will fuel and fire up our butane torches and learn how to solder jump rings. Course outline: You can never have too many bangles, and if you do, you can give them away as presents! In this class with instructor Iris Rogers Melamed we will learn how to make two sets of bangles: a set of three interlocking rolling bangles and a set of three wavy bangles. The interlocking bangles require a four-step process – solder, anneal, saw, solder so there will be lots of soldering practice.
