Do you feel lucky?

I recently discovered some articles that discussed luck and creativity and if they are related. One view indicated that people who considered themselves ‘lucky’ general found more opportunities in their day-to-day life while ‘unlucky’ people missed opportunities because they were too focused on something else. As the author put it, “Luck is not about how life looks at you, it’s about how you look at life”. It makes me wonder if I am missing some creative opportunities because I’m not paying to attention to ‘bigger pictures’ around me. By being intentionally observant, we can see unusual colour combinations that we …

Moving into November

So, Halloween in just around the corner; autumn leaves have changed colour and some parts of Canada and the United States are already experiencing snow. What’s next? Well, the holidays! Now is the time that many people are thinking of what holiday gifts they need to buy for family, friends, teachers and colleagues. How about hand-making a gift instead? It won’t necessarily save you money, but it will be more personal and thoughtful than a store gift card. It will be unique because it won’t be available anywhere else. It is an opportunity to share your special talents and skills. …

Celebrate your Creative Achievements

Graduations. Proms. Weddings. Anniversaries. For many, these are life’s milestones and opportunities to celebrate life with friends and family. Do you celebrate your achievements? Accomplishments can be large or small or even ‘steps along the way’ to bigger successes. Celebrating your accomplishments can boost your confidence, help to stave off burnout, and fuel your continued success. In the midst of Open Bead Night and Afternoon Bead Tea, I often hear “oh, it’s just a necklace”, or “it’s just a pair of earrings”. Please, never ‘just’ your accomplishments! You’ve spent time; you’ve applied learning; and you’ve put yourself into your designs. …

Celebrate National Craft Month with a Class

What is the difference between art and craft? The question isn’t new and has sparked debates for years.  Both are definitely within the realm of creativity! One possible answer is that craft is has a predictable outcome – such as the crafting of a chair or piece of jewellery. It provides a product that has a purpose and use. Art, on the other hand, is unpredictable, doesn’t have a specific use (such as a painting or sculpture) and is used to evoke thought and emotion. Of course, this is a very simplistic explanation and doesn’t cover those ‘in-between’ creative activities! …

Components to die for…and I’m not kidding!

A messy keyboard is not a pretty thing! Whenever I surf the Internet, &/or flip through magazines, I drool over exciting new components! Cabochon, pendant or bead – who cares? I’m not a purist, and I believe that you should experience anything your little heart desires. Art jewellery is generally viewed as its own entity! Not all makers, sell finished jewellery! They make components to sell to consumers, and other artists. A nice production line, and the revenue it generates, is very seductive! Perhaps you don’t want to spend time and effort, developing components of your own, but you want …
