Rolas, Rolas, Rolas

Keep those beads a rola-in’ … You can string or weave or even – put them on rawhide! Rolas are a bead from Preciosa-Ornela – made using what they call a “new quality cutting technology.” The advantage of this technology is “increased precision, for better adherence to the dimensions” – which means, I guess, they got tired of me saying “Czech beads are nice, but not consistent in size like the Japanese seed beads.”ย  ๐Ÿ˜‰ We are rolling (heh heh) them out in two sizes, 4.5 mm and 6.2 mm – and we are going to start out with tubes …

Swarovski vs Preciosa:

Someone asked me to add Khaki, Dark Red Coral and Indian Red to the Swarovski vs Preciosa comparison. Is there a match for these specific Swarovski colors? The short answer is – No. ๐Ÿ™ Let’s take a closer look. This is Swarovski Indian Red – in the 6mm faceted rounds. Indian Red is a transparent, reddish orange. Preciosa does not have a match – their “oranges” do not extend to a darker, reddish orange. Their closest match is “Sun” – which is a bright, happy, intense, almost pure orange. Pure in the sense of right in the middle between yellow …

Ways to Shine

There are ways to shine without draping yourself in crystal – and this week – we have two shiny options. First off – the promised Preciosa Nacre Pearls. These are Preciosa’s high-end pearls – and still more budget-friendly than Swarovski! Now – the caveat is – so far, we have the 4mm, and the 10mm and 12mm – which I agree – leaves a rather awkward gap in the middle. Supply chains being what they are these days (i.e. highly disrupted) – our choices were – leave you hanging until they all arrived, or – and this is the one …

Let Bicones be Bicones

The bicone is dead. Long live the bicone! It’s not really that bad – we are sad that Swarovski has turned away from what they referred to as the “DIY” market. This, to me, has connotations of dudes with power tools making dangerously rickety sundecks – so you can see how I might have not really embraced that particular term. However, we have to say – we think that you will be happy with the Preciosa bicones as a replacement. While we have had a number of them for a while – we have a lot more of them available …

Wire Lace (Woven Wire Ribbon) 50% off – wire you waiting? Rivets ‘n’ Stuff (Selected items) – 50% – Absoolutely rivetingBTW – I see no reason why those last two aren’t …

Sweet Summer Color

Sweet summer colors, like fresh flowers, summery prints, sherbet, fruit – colors that are both soft and intense at the same time! From Preciosa – Natural Pink and Natural Lilac. These glass seed beads are not dyed. And they come in size 10/0s, size 8/0s, size 6/0s, and the monster size 2/0. Or how about these dreamy Bondeli superduo colors? Available for a limited time only, these matte finish colours are as summery as swimming holes and hot dogs. Or Adirondack chairs and BBQ. Or sunburn and bug bites. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ย  ย  ย  Hmmm – that coral color reminds me …

Karo Bead Wrap

This project is by Martina Junova – designing for Preciosa-Ornela – the manufacturers of the Karo bead. This is a nice simple design that highlights the square shape and variety of colours in a Boho-Chic design that is simple to do, easy to vary, and can be adapted to the materials you have on hand.     Find the Karo beads here: http://www.beadfx.com/catalogue/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=947_1286 And in the event that you don’t have any 10/0 rocailles (seedbeads) on hand: http://www.beadfx.com/catalogue/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=858_202 The Ripple bead, for the closure is here: http://www.beadfx.com/catalogue/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=947_954 Lots of cord choices: Waxed Cotton or maybe something else appeals? http://www.beadfx.com/catalogue/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=864 And …

Take a Bow …

The new Bow beads – bigger than most of the shaped beads we’ve seen developed lately – and with lots of design possibilities far beyond bead weaving. Just look at these designs! This – for instance! I love the sort of tumbling look of the beads – and check out the instructions – it looks super easy to do! Click on the pattern to see the full size image. ? Here is a variation – more of a wavy river effect. And even wavier! You can see that this is made of modules, joined by large jumprings. What about the …
