We have a lovely selection of natural, cultured pearls. Pearls are produced by molluscs; oysters, clams, and mussels (ours are from freshwater mussels). Choose from classic white or cream round or near-round, or something more adventuresome – like some of the brilliant colors.

Pearls / Natural Cultured

If you prefer – we also have glass or faux pearls (also called fashion pearls, imitation pearls) – which are budget friendly, more regular in size and shape, and less subject to the sorts of damage natural pearls can fall prey to.

(Natural pearls – do not wear them in the pool (chlorine), put them on before doing your make up (they can lose their sheen if you dust them with your rouge), or get them wet (hard to dry out silk string), or spritz them with perfume (the alcohol can damage the surface.) And never put them in an ultrasonic cleaner. )

Pearls / Glass Pearls

The Preciosa ™ pearls are higher quality – comparable to the old Swarovski pearls. And, we have those in designer packages for large families. 😉 You can use the filters at the top of the page to show you just the sizes or colors or brands that you want.

And if pearls are perhaps not your style – we have all the round glass beads on sale too – so you can go for more color or contrast. You know, for a well-rounded design.

Now – as to stringing them – the tradition is knotting on silk. Silk comes in lovely colors, and has a beautiful drape (the way it falls gracefully on your chest). Pearls are knotted for 3 reasons:

1 If the string breaks – you never lose more than one pearl

2. The knot prevents them from rubbing on each other and damaging each other

3 A strand of pearls with knots makes a longer necklace than without. The pearls go further. 😉 For instance, 80 6mm pearls strung without knots is about 19 inches, with knots – 25 inches.

Also – knotted pearls or beads just look stunning and move beautifully. (Back to that “drape” thing.) Choose a contrasting color silk for a modern look, or match the pearls for a traditional look.

Silk Thread comes with the needle already threaded, and the card has oodles for a single necklace. Size 2 is the thinnest – best for small pearls, Size 3 is a good starter size if you are not sure.
