Summer Classes Wrap-up: “Not Already!”

It’s okay – I’m just giving you a head’s up that September is around the corner. But, before that happens, there are still lots of summer opportunities and classes at BeadFX! Metalwork artist and instructor Kelly Garland is offering our last comprehensive class for the summer. The five-day course is an ideal time to learn all about working with metal, including soldering, sawing, annealing and more! Marilyn Gardiner has two great chainmaille projects and Pamela Kearns is teaching how to create a pendant on the Clover Mini-Loom. Of course, the Happy Hour Torching, the Open Bead Nights and Afternoon Bead …

InspirationFX: Dragonfly Meadows

Dragonfly Meadows Designed by: Rochelle Kilmer Blue skies, where the dragonflies fly. Above meadows green, calming and serene. Sit. Stay for a while and watch the dragons flutter on by.? A light breezes gently moves thru the long grasses; blowing the clouds above. Sweet heat leaving butterfly kisses across your skin. Cicadas making their music, and a gentle hum envelops you. Be present. Stay in the moment. Making your necklace: First I started by making all the separate components, then I laid them out and started piecing the necklace together. Please take full advantage of your artistic license and change …

Somebody Pinch me!

Well – actually – don’t please. Pinch these beads instead. These are pinch beads – happy little glass beads that are pinched into a sort of triangle shape in profile. We have some new “old stock” beads And if that doesn’t make you as happy as a clam, then maybe these clam/scallop/sea shell beads will. or something in a nuggety random beach pebble kind of shape? Oh, and hey – remember these? They’re baaaaack! Now in packs of 5 or 10, you can make multiple pendants or design something over the top! As always – there is interesting new stuff …

The Freeform Wars! Peyote Stitch or Intuitive Bead Embroidery?

There’s something inside my head that I like to call the freeform wars. Should I start a new peyote stitch project, or how about Intuitive Bead Embroidery? I love both techniques, and I have a hard time choosing between the two! I’ve been up north the last couple of weeks, and I decided to bring a handful of my UFO’s (unfinished objects) along for the ride (see last Wednesday’s blog post). My head wasn’t into it! I chilled out with books, family, food, and nature! What more could a girl ask? But then I came home, just before the long …

Beat the Dog Days of Summer with a Cool Class

The dog days or dog days of summer are the hot, sultry days of summer. They were historically the period following the cosmic rising of the star Sirius, which Greek and Roman astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck. They are now taken to be the hottest, most uncomfortable part of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. If you’re finding the summer days and evenings just a little too stifling, head into BeadFX for an air-conditioned class. Our comprehensive classes continue with a 4-day metal clay course with Liz Reynolds. Pamela Kearns is offering …

InspirationFX: Big Blue

Get your creative juices flowing ~~~ Big Blue Designed by: Dwyn Tomlinson The soft pinks and blues of the Powder Blue Impression Jasper strike me as very soothing and pretty. I went to town and make a whole suite of items from this lovely stone. (Look below for a sneak peak) My first thought was to combine gold-plated metal findings and beads with the Powder Blue Impression Jasper, but I found I did not care for the look. The bright copper metal beads and finding – that was another story, however! The combination is gorgeous! The pinky tones of the …

Time for some Travel – Time Travel!

Most everyone has packed up their swimwear, bug spray and half-completed beading projects and headed out to the cottage for one last blast of summer. The city is half empty, and the traffic would be not too bad, except that the only other folks that haven’t left town are the construction folks. BTW – if you are driving to us west on Eglinton – don’t. Just don’t. Come along St. Clair instead. (Or use one of the apps that routes you around construction and traffic. I use Waze. It’s pretty good. ) While everyone is headed to the cottage, and …

Bead like you mean it: Adventures up north!

Are you a true bead fanatic? When you bead like you mean it, your beads will prevail, and your muse will be happy! Even though all of my creative goals have not been met (as laid out in last weeks blog post), I still plan to work on them. Ambitious goals are never a bad thing! Holiday activities require fluid plans! Change and challenge is quite often the norm! When I say bead like you mean it, it always brings Intuitive Bead Embroidery to mind. It’s one of my favourite beading activities. I reach for it first, and it’s my …

Bringing the World to You!

One of the many highlights of being the class coordinator is the opportunity to contact instructors from around the world and inviting them to come to BeadFX. In the past we’ve had such notable instructors as Jill Wiseman, Sara Sally LeGrande, Robyn Cornelius and Hadar Jacobson. Marti Brown’s classes feature anodizing nobium to create beautiful and colourful jewellery components. Her classes are available for all levels of students – perfect for metalwork ‘newbies’ to learn …
