History of Beads – must watch documentary

World on a String – Part One – the Eternal Bead World on a String – Part Two – The Tiny Mighty Bead World on a String – Part Four – The Treasured Bead World on a String – Part Five – A Passion for Beads Part Three does not appear …

#tohochallenge2023

Today we had the big reveal, live on Facebook, of our Toho Challenge 2023. We logged in and watched, agog, as Rochelle Jay unboxed our creation! You can experience it too, with the video here. It was so much fun to re-experience our piece through the eyes of someone new. This piece – along with other Toho Challenge pieces, will be on display at BeadFest in August in Pennsylvania, then onto Japan, and finally to Germany. Clearly – this butterfly will have a lot of travelling to do! Good thing he takes his own garden with him!

Bead Embroidery – Cat Patch Fever

Thought I would share with you this time-lapse of this little cat embroidery from the Bead Embroidery Kits. This is a smaller version of the wall hanging, and took me only a few days of odd hours here and there to complete. It is designed to be a patch – sewn-on to clothing, but I might make it into a brooch instead – not decided yet. Or I might add velcro to the back for easy removal. Because with the dogs – I have nothing that I am confident that I would not have to wash – and I am …

Skulls

What skull duggery is this? It takes a head to get ahead! Don’t forget our selection of skulls, from Swarovski to stone to chain, we have skulls all year long.Because it is what is inside that counts. 😉

Interchangeable Pendants

I didn’t get around to talking about these new items with the Thursday update, because, well – I got distracted. But I thought you might want to see them, instead of just stumbling across them. Anyway – we have these three new interchangeable pendants, that are really quite clever. The first one is a fairly classic design – it has a screw on ball, and you put the pendant of your choice (forward facing hole) on it, and screw on the ball end.   The design is clean and simple they they look stunning. It’s a very versatile item too. …

Take a Bow …

The new Bow beads – bigger than most of the shaped beads we’ve seen developed lately – and with lots of design possibilities far beyond bead weaving. Just look at these designs! This – for instance! I love the sort of tumbling look of the beads – and check out the instructions – it looks super easy to do! Click on the pattern to see the full size image. ? Here is a variation – more of a wavy river effect. And even wavier! You can see that this is made of modules, joined by large jumprings. What about the …

2018 – Live Purple

2017 is on it’s way out the door – and a lot of people will be happy to see it go. Pantone has declared that the 2018 colour of the year is Purple. Actually – they are calling it Ultra Violet – but, to the best of my knowledge, you can’t actually see Ultra Violet unless you are a bee – A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future. Nevertheless – Pantone 18-3838 “Ultra Violet” is a very pretty shade of blue-purple violet – a …

Huicholing

Huichol, Huicholing. To Huichol. Huichol has become a verb around here – we use it to describe the process of covering something with beads. It started when we started carrying the Beadswax, and it is now just part of our lexicon. So recently I found this artist – Jan Huling – who is working in a similar vein. She calls herself a “beadist” – a term that I find very appealing because it is so open-ended, and she makes wonderful surface designs with beads using thin lines of glue and pre-strung beads, which she lays down on the glue and …

Such fun we had!

Such fun we had last Saturday! A demo by the talented team of Karina Guevin and Cedric Ginart – demonstrating making one of their signature glass goblets for a bus-load of excited collectors! Who knew we could pack so many into the studio! Celebrity glass blower Laura Donefer and renowned glass artist Susan Edgerley were also in attendance. These world-class artists put Canada on the map in the glass world! Plus – they are all super-nice people!   Karina taught a class here at BeadFX – watch our calendar for more potential classes to come!
